Online Learning

Online learning is the future of education. Regardless of whether it is 100% virtual, a 60/40 hybrid course, or a standard face-to-face class, using varied technologies to instruct students ensures equal access to information while accommodating different learning styles. Allowing students to demonstrate knowledge of a subject through alternate means is the basis of UD.

When faculty are first assigned to teach an online course, they often have little knowledge regarding how to get started. Some novice online faculty may have the good fortune of first team-teaching an online course, teaching an online course that has already been developed, or completing an online training program. No matter their level of experience, they are likely to have questions such as, “How will I lecture on the really important ideas?” or “How will I know if my students are learning or just hopelessly confused?” There is also the question that fundamentally changes their usual methods of teaching: “Do I really need to be present in my course site every day?” These are the kinds of questions that inspired the writing of The Online Teaching Survival Guide: Simple and Practical Pedagogical Tips (Jossey-Bass, 2010).
